Lumbar decompression is performed in a clinical setting using state-of-the-art equipment. The treatment is traction based. Motorized traction forces are applied gradually and create a negative pressure on the spine. This action allows the spinal components to be pulled back within normal confines of the discs. Blood flow and oxygen are increased, which allows for faster healing to the affected area. The discs in the lumbar spine are exposed to greater loads than other parts of the spine. When the lumbar spine’s structures are injured or weakened, it causes pressure on the discs, which often results in pain, stiffness and numbness.
During lumbar decompression therapy, the patient is fit with a harness around the pelvis and trunk. Patients lie face down or face up on a computer-controlled table. The chiropractor operates the computer and customizes the load to patient-specific needs and condition. Typically, lumbar decompression therapy lasts between 20 to 30 minutes. Many patients find lumbar decompression therapy extremely relaxing. It has been proven to be effective for back pain, sciatica, bulging discs, degenerative disc disease, worn spinal joints and injured or diseased spinal nerve roots. Depending on your condition, multiple treatments may be required over a period of five to seven weeks. To determine if you are a good candidate for lumbar decompression therapy, a chiropractor will review your medical history, perform a physical exam and order diagnostic imaging tests.
At Dr. Phillips Chiropractic, Nutrition and Wellness, Dr. Phillips uses the latest computer guided lumbar decompression technology to gently stretch and reposition the spine into its correct position. It’s a safe procedure, and many patients experience some level of relief after the first treatment. Dr. Phillips also carefully monitors your treatment sessions.
Dr. Phillips take a holistic approach to healing and may integrate other chiropractic care services into your treatment plan in addition to the advanced technology of lumbar decompression. Other treatment modalities include cold laser therapy, physiotherapy, massage therapy, corrective exercises and nutritional counseling. Together, all of these modalities work synergistically with lumbar decompression. Deep tissue massage and Swedish massage help relax muscles, reduce trigger points, increase oxygen and blood flow and work with lumbar decompression for pain management and faster healing.
Cold laser therapy may also be used in combination with lumbar decompression therapy. With cold laser therapy, energy and therapeutic light reach below the skin’s surface to repair heal damaged cells. It also reduces back pain and reduces inflammation. With nutritional counseling, you can learn all about the right foods and natural supplements to enhance healing and have a healthy spine.
