Back Pain Patients Find Relief with Chiropractic Treatment

back_pain_san_antonio_tx.pngMany people are first introduced to chiropractic care when they are struggling with various types of back pain. While there are many commonalities between people who suffer from backaches, each person experiences it in a different way, and from a complex set of underlying causes. Dr. Phillips’ goal is to first find out why a patient is suffering from pain in the back, not simply to cover it up with medications. Causes can vary from back injuries suffered at work, at home, or in a car accident, years of poor posture and incorrect movement habits, genetic and developmental disorders or chronic conditions. Whatever is causing your back pain, Dr. Phillips can help you find a lasting solution.

Scoliosis, Sciatica and Fibromyalgia All Contribute to Back Pain

During a patient’s first visit with Dr. Phillips, he will provide a complete exam to help determine where the back pain originates. Often, the pain stems from a misalignment of the spine. This misalignment can happen over the course of years, starting all the way back in childhood.

Scoliosis, for example, is a disorder where the spine develops an “S” or “C” curve instead of a straight line as viewed from the back. Sciatica is another symptom that often points to a spinal misalignment that may have come from an injury. It can also happen when a herniated disc or inflamed piriformis muscle pinches the sciatic nerve, causing pain down the lower back and into the leg. Fibromyalgia is a chronic, painful condition that not only causes persistent back aches, but pain all over the body.

The good news is that chiropractic adjustment and a host of complementary therapies can naturally relieve backaches. In cases where we discover pinched nerves from a spinal misalignment (called a “subluxation”), Dr. Phillips can employ a series of gentle, precise spinal adjustments to realign the vertebrae and release pinched nerves. This is usually the first line of treatment for most causes of pain, and can provide dramatic relief.

Realigning the spine is only the first step in recovery, however. For backs that have been out of alignment for a long time, or that have been injured, it is also important to retrain the muscles supporting the spine. By teaching patients therapeutic exercises, we help them strengthen and stabilize core muscles to keep the back in proper alignment. Massage therapy is also an important way to support natural pain relief and healing. It increases circulation, reduces inflammation and releases endorphins into the system. Spinal decompression therapy is helpful for people with herniated and damaged discs. Through targeted stretching of the spine, this modality actually helps reshape and regenerate the discs so that pinched nerves are relieved.
